I pulled a 1955 IH 300U with a C169 engine out of the neighbor black berry bushes and started finding all the parts. While I was reinstalling the lifters, push rods and rocker arms, it seems that the push rods are too short by about 1/4 inch. My question is, are the lifters suppose to have something in it, like a spacer or some kind of cushioning? There was some kind of rag like material in them when I removed them for cleaning. This did not seem to be normal. I took a wild stab and ordered a shop manual from the internet and hope this will help, but for $20.00 I don’t expect much.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi Joe, Call this toll free number and ask for
farm equipment parts. 1-800-732-0017.
Ask them if they will fax or mail you a copy of the valve train parts list for your 300. I have one for a 460, but they're different. Hal

That's pretty strange. Wonder how that rag-like stuff got in there. That engine should have regular old solid lifters. One thing that comes to mind- you didn't happen to use any parts from the older engines in that family, like the one in the Farmall H, did you? I'm no expert on H's, but it seems to me that some of the valve train parts were longer or shorter depending on which cylinder head it had.

You need a parts manual, but many sources, including Case-IH will have pushrods. There is no packing. You need to examine the cam and lifters, they may need replacing, if someone actually ran the thing that way.

Thanks all;

There is no telling at this point what parts were actually running in the machine. Only the word of a 86 year old neighbor that said it was running when he parked it. He had the head rebuilt, but was it a swap or not I don't know. The rag material must of been there to take up the slop. It was packed in there really tight. I will do some measuring and also give a call to the recommended number.

Thanks again,

Joe
