My 10 month old colt just ripped and chewed off the spark plug wires from the distributor on my Farmall M. I'm sure the number 1 cylinder is at the front of the engine. Can someone tell me which is number one on the distributor so I can rewire. Thanks, Dan

To all who replied regarding my firing order on my M I appreciate very much. I believe the best advice is to determine where the rotor is pointing at the top of the compression stroke of the number 1 cylinder. Thanks again.

Some of these old tractors have been worked on by ameature mechanics over the years and they did not allways go by the book. Have seen Number 1 wire in every position on cap if you wire it correctly and it will not start nebraka kirk had correct procedure.

Also watch the direction of rotatiom of the distributor, otherwise, it will not run very well.

And for 4-cylinder engines (ours included) it is almost always 1-3-4-2

A WWII bomber pilot would say No. 1 is 2 o'clock high looking from the rear towards the front.

Nope! 12 o'clock level or 12 o'clock low - but never high from the tractor seat. My nickel Dick Davis

It should be marked on the cap--but #1 is the top right viewed from the rear.
2 1
4 3

Turn the engine over until the No. 1 cylinder is at the top of a compression stroke. Then see what direction the roter is pointing in relation to the distributer cap, and that is the #1 position.
