Just bought my first Farmall. A 1949 H. I'm a CASE man so I am not too familiar with the red tractors. Can you help me clear up some questions about my H. First of all, what is the champion Sparkplug # used in this tractor? Second, is the cap for the mag on this tractor the same cap as a distributer cap?
Third, what year did the logo on the front change from FARMALL to IH? Forth, Is a 6 volt H positive or negative ground?
Fifth, anyone know what carb kit I should get What model type of carb do I have?
Finally, what do the letters O, D, and B stand for on the light switch?

Thanks for any help, DRD

Welcome to the club.

1. I use D21's in mine, but it depends on whether you are going to really work it or parade it. I don't use mine too hard, therefore, the D21's.

2. Nope, they're different.

3. The Farmall emblem was used on the H's and the IH emblem was used on the super H's. This should have been around 1953.

4. Originally it was a 6 volt positive ground. Who knows what changes have been made over the years.

5. Sorry, no clue.

6. Off, Dim and Bright.

Hope this helps some. Larry

Mike,

I'm not sure what numbers you found. The serial number for an H should start with the letters FBK and the super H would start with SH. The serial number should be on an aluminum plate riveted on the left side of the bell housing. The valid suffixes for the H and M series are below:

X 1 Gasoline
X 1 A Gasoline – Low Speed Gears
X 1 B Gasoline – 5000 ft. Altitude
X 1 C Gasoline – 8000 ft. Altitude
X 1 E Gasoline – 5000 ft. Altitude – Low Speed Gears
X 1 F Gasoline – High Speed Gears
X 1 G Gasoline – High Speed Gears – Low Speed Gears
X 1 H Gasoline – High Speed Gears – 8000 ft. Altitude
X 1 J Gasoline – 7 m.p.h. High Speed Gears – 5000 ft. Altitude
X 1 L Gasoline – 5000 ft. Altitude – 7 m.p.h. 4th Speed – Low Low Speed
X 1 M Gasoline – 8000 ft. Altitude – Low Low Speed
X 1 N Gasoline – 8000 ft. Altitude – Low Low Speed – 7 m.p.h. 4th Speed

X 2 Modified

X 3 Kerosene
X 3 A Kerosene – Low Speed Gears
X 3 B Kerosene – 5000 ft. Altitude

X 6 Low Speed Gears
X 6 A Low Speed Gears – Starting or Lighting
X 6 B Low Speed Gears – High Speed Gears
X 6 C Low Speed Gears – 5000 ft. Altitude

X 8 8000 ft. Altitude

Mike, it could be possible that somebody put an incorrect emblem on the tractor sometime in its lifetime.

I would double-check on the serial number. If the prefix is FBH then you have an H. If the prefix is SH then you have a Super H.
