I have a '48 H that is jumping out of 5th gear. Is this a hard one to fix?

It could be three problems. Number one is a worn 5th gear. Number two is worn or bent shifter forks/detents. Number three is a worn shifter.

Pull the Belt Pulley assembly and get your nose down in there with a flashlight. I would say the ball detents are not sticking in the notches to keep the shifter in place or the 5th gear is probably rounded out on the inside from years of doing the 5th gear slam. If the teeth are rounded enough...the gear will not stay in place under any load. Does the shifter snap into gears or does it have lots of slop? If it is crisp, then the 5th speed gear is probably sharp enough to cut leather and slippery enough to just let loose.

Give us a hollar before opening it up. You do not need to split the tractor to fix the above problems.
