What is the most likely cause of a howl in the rear end of a SMTA. Of course it could be in the transmission also. I"ve pulled the LPO unit and all looks OK in the rearend. The previous owner did not believe in changing the oil so it could be most anything. Any suggestions?

Hey Marv, Fill her up with the correct amount of oil and run her for a while and see if it does not go away or lighten up after everything gets relubed and run again. JON

The howl is constant. The faster the ground speed, the louder the howl. As mentioned before, the previous owner failed to change the oil. When I drained it out, it was mostly cream colored water. Hopefully, the bearings are OK and I can adjust the ring gear/pinion setting and reduce the noise level. Thanks for your suggestions. Marv

Does it howl all the time ,under load, coasting,at all speeds. I have found a lot of times the noise is caused by incorrect ring gear and pinion clearance. Generally fixable by moving shims between the bearing cage and the frame from one side to the other.

Did it do this with the PTO both on and off? I've been told that the howl is common in the SMTA. It must have been, because they put a "seasonal disconnect" in. This is a lever on the bottom of the TA housing that you take a bolt out and move (dont force it, gently hold pressure on it while someone rolls the motor over. Otherwise you'll damage very expensive, important parts..... ).

There is a picture in your owners manual too.
