I checked the gas in my tank and it was brown with rust. I took off the tank and drained it out and cleaned the sediment bowl assembly. What is the best method to clean out the interior of an old gas tank. When i looked at the old gas I did not see any particles of rust in the bottom. Thanks!

There is a product called Naval Jelly, I'm not sure of the manufacturer, but it can be found at most discount stores, Wal Mart etc. or paint stores. It comes in 8 or 10 oz. bottles.

You would need to drain and dry the tank, remove it from the tractor, dump a couple of bottles of Naval Jelly in there and shake it up/slosh it around to coat all of the interior surfaces. The stuff is water soluble and works instantly so when the tank looks clean simply rinse it out good with water, let it dry and it will be ready for use.

The stuff works great! Try it on some exterior surface that has similar surface rust to get an idea of the dwell time required, it only takes a few minutes.

Paul:
I cleaned my W4's gas tank out last year with a pressure washer. **you will want to have a wetsuit on when you do this! :>)
I've heard that you can somewhat seal it with "Dextron" .

Good luck!
Jeff

You are going to get as many answers on this as there are gas tanks that are rusty. Everyone seems to have a favorite method.
