What are anyone's thoughts on putting sealer on the head gasket? I am putting the engine back together. In the past I have put on head gaskets with no sealer, or just sprayed the block and head with aluminum paint. I noticed that the "rebuild video" I got advises to use a copper spray on the gasket. Any recommendations from the experts?????

I have reused several M headgaskets and all I do is use some high temp sealer. That in addition to going about 2 to 3 psi higher than the spec. Haven't had a problem yet and I have done this on many tractors.

I have never used anything on head gaskets. Like some of these postings have said to clean both surfaces and check for flatness, then torque
in a criss-crossing pattern from the center in both directions and retorque after running the engine. Hal

Glen, The head gaskets you get from Case NH do recommend using a sealer. The high tack copper spray on is the one they recommend. If you bought an after market gasket, I would assume you follow their specs.

My Dad was a JD mechanic on the 2 cylinders for years and they recommended soaking the head gaskets in water. Not really sure why. I have used aluminum paint on automotive head gaskets and used the copper spray stuff on the last one I put on my SMTA. It seems to have worked but maybe would have been the same dry too. Think the main thing is making sure surfaces are completely clean and head is flat.

soaking the head gaskets in water should be used on head gaskets with an asbestos center. The asbestos does shrink, and rehydrating the gaskets will make the gasket torque evenly.

Im not a expert but Ive done a few. I have never used nothing on the head gasket at all just clean both surfaces real good. Torque too specs. When I put back together I use silicone for a temporary vavle cover gasket, Then run it for a couple of days easy then Take valve cover back off and re torque, Then use my Valve cover gasket ,Run her a little easy at first too let her get broke in good. Just my 2 cents Jay
