i have been useing the CIH low ash 10w and 30w. i have no objections to it other than the price. i need to trim some costs to get my inputs down and there is definetly cheaper oil out there and was just wondering what everybody else uses. do i need low ash oil or not? do i need non-detergent oil or not? i have a 706 wit the 263 gas, a 766 with the 360 diesel and a WD allis. i use 10w in the winter in the 706 and 30w in summer and leave 30w in the other two since they aren't used in the winter. i'm looking at napa oil but it is not low ash.

Pennzoil 30wt in our 706 gas.
Pennzoil is a low ash oil.

if you run more than 750 hr a year on your engine's,low ash has benefits, if not, don't worry about it. low ash oil was developed for extended drain intervals, over the road trucks particularly, because of the reduction in piston deposits and the oils ability to suspend more particulates between oil changes. as far as brand, case does not make their oil, shell, mobil, chevron etc. makes oil for everyone, catepillar's oil is made by mobil, to their spec of course, but it is no better than mobil oil 1300. you need to look at the classification of the oil, that will tell you if it meets the latest spec from api, i.e cg-4, ch-4, ci-4plus, etc. we run 15/40 in everything from gas v8 pickup engines to JD and Cat heavy off road engines, no engine problems at all, seriously. i would run 15/40 in everything unless very cold weather, then use same brand/rating in a 10/30 for winter, most of the better oils/makers will offer their oils in both 15/40 and 10/30 for use in different climates/temps. find a brand you are comfortable with, whether dealer oil or oil company oil, and stick with it. oil company branded oil will almost always be cheaper and be the same as the dealer oil in quality if not better. consider availablity, and if oil scans are available as well.

Sorta - it's true what you say about mobil, etc. making Cats, Ih, JD, etc oil. I also agree with you about running 15w40.

But where you are mislead is that low ash is not directly associated with extended drains. Mobil for example on their 1300 series is up around 1.3% (off the top of my head) ash. Which I do consider low-ash, but according to manufacturers recomendations, they want .5% or less, so that wouldn't make 1300 low-ash but it IS mobil's extended drain oil. I'm reasonable sure that I can say it's pretty much the same across the board for all the majors.

I use Rotella 15W40 in everything from my 39 H to my 560D. I have never had any failings and I do use my tractors, sometimes pretty hard. I buy it in drums from Sams Club of all places.

I'm IH through and through, but you can't beat Shell Rotella T 15W40.

Check their web site for applications.

I would use a good 15w-40 (ch,cg) in the 706 and 766, like Case No. 1 oil. The WD should use 30 non-detergent unless you know it's been rebuilt in the last 20 yr.s.

We used detergent oil in the tractors in the 50's. IMO the detergent vs non-detergent oil is a myth.

Let's take a closer look at the financials. You have three tractors, and I assume you change oil twice a year and for these calculations let assume each tractor has a 15 quart sump. Total oil usage is 90 quarts and say you can save 50 cents/quart. The savings total $45. Now if you farm 100 acres, that is 45 cents acre. Not significant in my opinion. I think i would look somewhere else to cut costs.

How about saving by buying in bulk. I have always used what ever was cheap 30 wt in my Hs and Ms Tractor supply< Wally mart< The way I see it if you change it when your supposed to than its all good. I would be using 15/40 in the diesles though. There is two different kinds I guess Gas and Diesel 15/40.

15W40 is pretty common in diesel engines, I have heard people say to definitely use IH low ash brand--I don't have that new a tractor, so I don't have much of an opinion, except to use the multigrade, unless it's very cold in the winter where you live.

CNKS, you are scratching what i want to know, can i run multigrade or not? i've heard horror stories of spun bearings from using multigrade oils. lot's of guys i talk to say to never run a multigrade in those older tractors but there's a ton of guys that do and don't have any problems.

I have "hobby tractors", meaning I don't use them much, if I did "perhaps" I would use straight 30 in the summer -- but for gas engines, I don't think there is a problem with multigrade -- and for diesels, Rotella, and other brands of 15W40 meet diesel specs. I would not use an gas type 15W40 in a diesel though. My personal opinion is that multigrade is fine. If you have a new tractor, do what the manufacturer says, regardless, for old ones modern oils are much improved over what was available when yours were manufactured.

Current recommendations for your 706 specifically say that multi-grades are not recommended. However, like you say, there are tons of people using them and not having problems. If it were me, and I wanted to run 15w40, I would be more aware of the ash content than the weight.

Just noticed you said the 706 was gas, about any 15W40 would be fine in it.

Ya that low ash is pricy, We use 15w40 in ours, the stuff they use in the big diesel engines, we just get it from Case and Drum Lubricants.
