I was using my Farmall 706 today with a 4 bottom mounted plow and a four section harrow. Right away this morning I noticed the steering was making a noise and it sort of had a surge. Then it seemed as if the brakes were not 100% as at times there was quite a bit of free travel in the pedals. Then the tractor wanted to stop on the "high side" of the TA. Pull the TA back and away she went. So, I know this is all related to the hydraulic system that supplies the steering, brakes and TA. There was a time or two where the steering noise left. Actually manual steering then. Eventually everything powered up again with the same noise and surges in the steering. The transmission was low. I think I put in 2 gallons at least. That brought it up to slightly above add one gallon. What is going on here???? Do I have air in the system???? Does this oil get filtered on the right hand side??? Could the filter be restricting the flow of oil into the pump????? Help?????

Add more hyd. fluid. Fill to the " FULL" mark, at least. More will not cause any problems ( better to be above full if you run on steep hills like I do).Change the hyd. filter while you are at it.

It sounds to me like you need to change the hydraulic filter. Yes, it's the one on the R.H. side of the transmission, and no, I don't believe that all your trans, fluid will leak out when you take the cover off even though it looks like it will. A clogged filter will give the symptoms you described.

The fact that you were low on hyd. fluid would be unrelated to the filter. Did the problem get better when you added fluid? I still think the filter is the first thing to change.

I agree. The big question here is why you were down THREE GALLONS of hydraulic fluid. That's quite a bit to be down.

Thanks guys that is where I will start - filter and more transmission oil. Normally I do keep the oil at the proper level. It had sat most of the day before running an orbit motor on an auger. Little did I know it lost some oil out of the coupler. Thanks again for the ideas.
