thanks for info.on brakes
raditor holds water,after cleaning out birds nest and new top hose.let it run for 30 min. or so,oil press. still good,no smoke.i still cain"t belive it had no water in engine,as it is in north texas where we had lot of rain.
will an m carb. work right on this 264 engine?,seems to starve out at exceleration.
sure have used a lot of pb blaster along with a few busted nuckles lol

Couldn"t tell from your post if you had overhauled carb. The shaft from governor to carb could be hanging up so it does not open up right.

The carbuerators are not the same, as to jetting. The M carb main jet is adjusted until it "runs smooth", the SM main jet is adjusted 5 turns out for max power, and can be turned in for better fuel economy. In other words I consider it to be an adjustable fixed jet. It is likely that the M carb on an SM is too lean, you might try opening the main jet.

you may want to check where the fuel line goes into the carb there is a long round screen, sometimes this gets partially plugged, also check the screen on the sediment bowl,,, I don't think you need to replace the carb...
