My new 140 has a whining noise coming from the area around what I believe to be the hydraulic pump. It is not real loud but different than my newer tractors- is this normal? Also- the PTO is a bit noisier than my newer stuff- normal or not?
The tractor is in excellent condition and appears to have never been abused- it runs great and really does a good job cultivating!

Eric: On your hydraulic whining check the screen. On the left side of touch control unit just foreward from drain plug is a cover held in by 4 small bolts. Behind that is a cylinder type screen, if dirty could be restricting flow to the pump. The cover and cylinder all one piece. If I were doing this I would drain all hydraulic oil and fill with new Hytran. If you just do screen you will loose some oil anyhow.

On you pto noise get a poor man's stethacsope, just cut off hoe, shovel or broom handle. Start pto running and go over housings placing end of handle different places and other end to your ear. You will soon pinpoint noise. And DON'T cut off your wife's good broom handle.

Dad bought a new 140 in '79 and the pump has always been noisy. The differental gears are somewhat noisy on them too.

Noises are tough to go by due to differences in perception from one person to the next, but if everything works and it doesn't get any worse...

Remember, the tractor is a minimum of 26 years old, and probably much older than that.

The PTO is noisy, how? Continuous clunking may indicate a bearing headed south.

Guys- thanks for all the info. I am going to drain the touch control and clean the screen this weekend even though the fellow I bought it from changed all the fluids less than a year ago. I heard another one running this past week and it was noisier than mine- I think I am just used to the sounds a new tractor makes. I rowed up my garden yesterday- the little hillers worked great- I plan to take it down this winter and totally restore it. Who do you guys buy parts from? (like battery boxes, cultivator parts etc?)
