My brother-in-law is a mechanical engineer for "a large farm equipment manfacturer", specifically desigining for the ground drive systems on their combines. I had the transmission cover off my M this weekend, had to take out one of the bull pinions to replace the oil seal, and I noticed him looking curiously at the bearings, pinion gears, etc. He asked me what an M was rated for at the drawbar (the manual says 35 HP), and he pulled out his micrometer and started measuring bearing sizes, shaft sizes, transmission case thickness, etc. Did some figuring and he determined that my M trans and drive components were designed to stand an over-torque condition of 150% of drawbar HP. He told me that where he works, the standard is to design for 110% drawbar HP.

My brother in law just couldn't get over it how well built my M was. Is he just pulling my leg? If he's on the level, then these older tractors ARE much better built than modern ones!

Shoot!...I remember when we got up before light, ate three meals a day, and went to bed with the chickens! That was when we worked at least a half day...6 till 6. Based on today's work force that's over 150%. The same was expected of the tractor back then. All day, almost every day.

Our 1946 M is still going strong! Used each year for vegatable farming - plow, disc, drag, etc. Runs as strong and smooth as, I suppose, the day dad bought it.

Pulling your leg? Nahhh… My dad only had three tractors that he farmed with in the 1950’s. An F-12 dedicated to an old Freeman loader, a B Farmall that did all the lighter work like sewing grain, pulling an old 4-row planter, mowing, etc, and the M. The M ran almost daily. He used it for custom corn shelling, disking, plowing (pulled 3-14s in 3rd gear), bailing, cultivating (4-row), mounted the corn picker on it etc, etc… The M was the workhorse until he bought a 560 in 1963. Finally in the mid 1970’s he went through the entire rear-end and replaced all the bearings. Seems one of the axle bearings went bad and he decided after 25 years of service to replace them all. Oh, forgot to mention that he went with the Firecrater overbore as soon as it was available, and put rotators on the exhaust valves also, so it was putting out more power than stock for a lot of time. That same M is still in service under a DuAll 325 loader although not used every day, it is still as dependable as it was when it was new.

Come to think of it, he may have actually been a bit conservative on his 150% :>)

150% of 35hp sounds about right, that makes them good for 52hp. That's why they started failing when the rear end was used in the 560 with 52+ hp.

There it is in a nutshell, if the old Farmalls had not been built that well most of them would be long gone.
