So i re-did the wiring, cleaned the carb, cleaned the fuel tank and lines and now she starts on the first turn. but I am not out of the water yet

After 20 minutes of driving the engine starts to sound like it is struggling, then it fires funny coughs and dies. It does not need to cool down, but will fire back up again. I checked the distributor cap and there were brass powder in there, so my points are messed up?? How do I adjust/clean my cap, and what should it look like, there is some scoring on the cap pins. another post mentioned a bad coil?

the second immediate concern is a slight wobble in the front wheel, so that when I turn it strains and shudders, Is this an adjustment problem or new bearings or what?

I must say I have turned a huge lawn ornament into a small soon-to-be-working tractor, and that's thanks to all (sure wasn't me solving things), it's the only thing that has got me mobile.

Tom

You have lots of advice on the fuel problem. I use an in line filter as well. I also have had points that don't want to stay adjusted.

Steering slop is a common problem and is wear on the steering gear. At the base of the steering shaft there is a cover on the right side. If you open this there is a gear wheel and a worn gear. If you take the gear wheel off and rotate it 180 you will have the worm gear ride on "new" teeth. This will get rid of 90% of the wobble.

Since you say it doesnt need to cool down,Im guessing a fuel problem still, probably still enough crud in there the slow down the flow.A coil would need to cool down before it would work again.

When you drain the sediment bowl then open the valve to refill it how fast should it dribble in there?? It goes dropwise until I loosen the bowl then a very slow dribbly stream. Besides in the carb which I think is really clean that valve is the only thing I think that could still be clogged.

Theres your problem, did you clean out the sediment bowl assembly? Me personally,I just get new ones when the ydo that, they should fill pretty quick. You may also try repalcing the round gasket with a cork one.

Try loosing the gas cap to see if you see an increase in fuel flow. The vent may be plugged.
I think you have rust and dirt blocking the outlet. You may need to pull the tank and have it
cleaned. Hal

Are you sure you have correct rotor installed?
Is there any slop (wear) in the distributor shaft?
See if it can be moved from side to side.

You can remove those wheel bearings and examine
them for wear or may be need to be tightened. Hal

Tom:
You need to replace your coil. I'm not sure about the front wheel problem.
Hope this helps,
Jeff

The coil looks beat up and pretty darn old, So I guess i'll go out tomorrow and bite the bullet. I told the wife this would be an expense-free hobby (I can hear the collective laughter from the forum...). So how long do we expect to get from coils?? A few years? 20 years? So often I find poeple saying to just replace something, too bad not everything on a tractor could be repaired.

I'll post the results. thanks.

If it fires right back up, it ain't the coil. Coils overheat and need to cool off for several minutes before the tractor will fire again.

Just because the carb was clean when you assembled it doesn't mean that it didn't suck a bunch of crap out of the tank and clog up again.
