Kirt, Having read your post and the responses, including yours, I am inclined to think that you bought a PTO seal, but you really meant to replace the belt pulley shaft seal. These are two different seals. To replace the pulley spline shaft seal, you must remove the spline protective sleeve which is held in place by a retainer washer and bolt at the end of the spline. Then remove the seal retainer which is held by three cap screws. Remove the seal and press in a new one. The new ones differ from the originals in that the new seals are neoprene rather than leather, and are much thinner, (1/4 in approx) To install, make sure you apply some grease or patrolium jelly to the seal so that it will slide over the spline and onto the seal surface. Pounding these seals into the seal retainer invites disaster as it is very difficult to keep the seal straight and it is very easy to distort or trash the seal. Pressing works better, but either way, starting the seal straight is important. Unless the PTO shaft is leaking, I wouldnt think it would be necessary to replace it just for the sake of replacing it, as it is much more involved than replacing the pulley shaft seal. There is not a removable seal retainer for the PTO, and the original seal, because of its thickness is a bear to get out without removing the entire PTO assembly. Even with a seal puller, it is a difficult process. The new one is simpler to replace, simply because it is thinner. As some have said, it is possible to stack three replacement seals in place of the original PTO seal, but it really is not necessary, because of the composition of the newere seals. I hope this helps.

Paul when you say belt pulley shaft this is in the front of the engine. Is this correct? The seal I need to change is in the back of the tractor where the spline shaft comes out.

Like I said I'm new to this tractor game. There is only one spline shaft out the back of the tractor. Is the the belt pulley shaft or PTO? The seal was leaking very bad and has to be changed. I started taking the seal out and there was a stack of washers and thin seals then a regular looking oil seal inside a sleave and a cupped washer behind these seals. Is this also part of the old seal?

Kirt, TDK has given you the part information I believe you need to locate the seal. You might want to purchase a Super C parts catalog for your SC as it contains part breakdown and assembly diagrams for the whole tractor. It certainly makes finding parts easier once you have a part number. The manual number is TC-44B and can be purchase from Binder Books at (503) 684-2024 or through their website at www dot binderbooks dot com. A owners manual would be a good investment also from the same source. Enjoy the tractor as they are quite handy. Hal

Kirt, Just as an additional point, the inside of the seal rides on a bushing. If that bushing O.D. is worn were the seal rides, you will still be leaking fluid. That bushing needs to be a uniform diameter and clean of any nicks or scratches for a proper seal.

Kirt, I need to backup a second, Im talking about the belt pulley shaft, not the PTO shaft, but while your getting seals and repairing you may as well do that seal also, sorry about the confusion.

Your Case/IH dealer can get them. IH number is 358816R91. If no dealer nearby, take this number to any auto parts store(NAPA,etc.)and they should be able to get them for you - C/R # 13865.

Found a seal can you tell me how to change it. I had to break off the cap over the seal area. and found some steel washers and a flat seal then an oil seal. there is a sleave that all this slides into. Does this come out? new seal will not fit sleave is the same size as seal.

I recently replaced the PTO seal in my old H. The origional seal was over 1 inch thick, and the new seal I bought at the International Dealer was about 1/4 inch thick. I installed three new seals with a 1/4 inch gap between them. I filled the gap between seals with a good grade of marine duty wheel bearing grease. I don't know if this will work, but I thought it was worth a try. ken
