I have a 1946 Farmall H (single front wheel) I am learning about. I believe it has a magneto but am not sure. The tractor has a kill switch with a wire leading to the distributor with a coil setting on top of the distributor with one wire leading into the distributor cap. Also, every picture I've seen of an Model H the tractor has two front wheels yet mine only has one. any input.
Thanks.

There is nothing un-common or unusual about the single front wheel, it was an option, just the same as the two wheel narrow front, or even the wide front. All of these were options, and depending on what part of the country you are in, one is as common as the other. As far as your ignition system- the tractor would originally been equipped with a magneto, most of those tractors were converted to a distributor because of the greater ease of maintenance. What you are describing sounds to me like a distributor.

I think you may have a distributor too. Post any numbers that can find on it. It's probably Delco
Remy.

I've heard of H's having a single front wheel not sure why some were made that way. At least with
two wheels if you had a flat on one tire you could still drive it back to the barn. When we had a flat on a front I would run the tractor up on a board with the good tire. That way I didn't need a jack. Hal

Sounds like using the mag points for an external batt./coil ignition. The mags coil is internal and shaped to fit inside.

Wait a minute...you mean the coil is a separate entity from the "distributor"? A magneto doesn't have a separate coil.
