Been helping a friend try to get an "H" to charge. It's a 6V system with positive ground and coil/distributor ignition. Ignition and lights work correctly. Been using Bob M's wiring diagrams and they are great, thanks Bob. First thing I found was the field resistor was broken and completely open. I then checked wiring more carefully and found the A and F terminal wires were reversed on the generator. Without putting in a new field resistor, we grounded the F terminal to the generator frame and the ammeter moved toward discharge suggesting it might also be wired backwards. While the F terminal was grounded, I measured the voltage at the battery (engine running) and it was still just above 6 Volts, approx 6.5 Volts, but I expected to see around 8 Volts. I measured the resistance of the cutout while the contacts were closed (engine was off now and gen lead of the cutout disconnected) and it was 12.5 ohms which seems quite high to me although I don't have practical experience with this. Didn't try the "motoring" test of the generator but the brushes and commutator looked good. Would the generator be damaged by the A and F terminals being reversed? Can someone tell me what a good cutout should measure for resistance across battery to generator terminals when the contacts are closed? Previous info I have says the Field resistor should be 2.8 ohms. The light dimming resistor measured .6 ohms. Thanks for your help.

Ron - A few thoughts...

It's not likely anything was damage by the A and F wires being reversed.

You are correct that you should see 7-1/2 to 8 volts or so at the battery if it's being charged by the generator.

Your resistance reading across the cutout contacts is way out of whack! It should read 0 ohms (or perhaps 0.1 ohm if you have a good DVM). Your reading of 12.5 ohms says the cutout bad.

You might try lightly filing the cutout contacts and see if you can get the resistance down to 0 ohms. However my recommendation would be to get rid of the cutout and replace it with a voltage regulator. A regulator elimates the field resistor on the light switch, and does a much better job of maintaining the battery.
