Does anyone know,or can someone approximate how soon after casting IH COULD have used the parts. I know that they could go weeks or months BEFORE they used them, but how SOON could they have? I just checked the dates on several parts on my '49 H and Cub. Assuming 1-2 weeks, I have a mid to late January Cub, and a mid to late July H. H has remains of the just 'MCCORMICK' hood decal. Thanks, Kevin

Kevin: It wouldn't surprise me if I were to find castings on a particular tractor, one year apart. Had relative come to visit once, who worked in foundries at IH. He mentioned how they would do one particular casting for a period, then switch to another. Sounded to me as though they may for example do up a years supply of H blocks, then switch to M blocks. I gathered these production runs ranged from 1 to 3 weeks. Near as I understood, at any given time no more than 1/2 dozen castings would be in production.

I checked all the castings I could easily find. Out of about 7 or 8 on the H, all were within the period of July 9 - August 12, 1949. These were the wheels, torque or clutch tube, rear-end, engine, front bolster, belt pulley carrier, etc. I'm going to say mine was an August tractor. Not really important to me or anything, just a bug that got in my craw the other day that I wanted to figure out. Thanks everyone! Kevin

Also remember, the code is for the casting date, not when all the machining is done. Some parts require far more machining time than others (engine blocks and tranny housings vs axle housings). I'm sure this will delay their time to production. On some similar parts on my F-20 (bull gear housings), the two cast dates fall with in a few days.

Disagree with Rusty, not very many original tractors with date codes within 2 to 3 days of each other.Maybe he means months.Think use times varied from time to time during production.Think
some tractors are original that have some castings 6 months or more apart. My opinion.

I really don't know, but I doubt that IH maintained very much of a surplus inventory. I would think that the parts were cast at the foundry and were most likely assembled into a tractor within 2 or 3 days at the most. I feel that if all of the casting codes on any tractor fall within a few days of each other, then that tractor most likely is all original. If one of the casting codes does not match or even come close then that part has probably been replaced.
