What year or years did Farmall make the H tractor that started on gas and then switched to kerosene.

You could still order a Farmall on distillate through the 350 and 450 models in 1958.

I have heard guys around here burning 50/50 gas and diesel. No real advantage as gas and diesel are about the same price here and you would loose power also. Would be fun to try, but not sure if it would be worth the effort. I was going to use my "gas" tank on my W6 just as a reserve tank, beats walking back from the field when you run low on gas.

I would guess 1939-1953, because those are the years that they made Hs, and I'm fairly certain that the Supers were available in kerosene versions.

I always wondered why they made spark-ignition kerosene engines... Isn't kerosene closer to diesel fuel than gasoline? The fuel guy cuts our diesel with kerosene in the winter.

Not 100% sure on this guys, but I think they ran on distilate rather than Kerosene. Back in the 70's out in Nebraska, we used to haul what they called "tractor fuel" for CO-OP. It was a blend of kerosene and gasoline. Like I said, I'm not sure, but I understood that the distillate was the blend those old tractors burned. Maybe somebody older (more horsey sense or something) than me will jump in here and help us out. Harley

They ran both Distillate and Kerosene in addition to gasolene. Gasolene models were stamped with suffix X1, Kerosene X, and no suffix for distillate.

Distilate and kerosene both have the same octane rating - 35 to 50 range, but while distilate is derived from petroleum, kerosene is usually made from coal. Used to burn #0 distilate in my hurricane lamps in the cabin in Alaska. It was cheaper than kerosene and smelled just as nice.

My Dad ran his on kerosene, and later he went to white gas. I'm thinking the white gas was under ten cents a gallon at the time, and It looked like coleman fuel, there wasn't a problem restarting if you happen to kill the engine, like they was on kerosene.

My dad farmed with F series, dual fuel Farmalls. Started on gas, got em hot, then swithed to the main tank. As long as you watched the temp gage and kept the shutters adjusted so they were running about 200F, they ran fine. Gas was about 20 cents a gallon delivered to the farm. Tractor fuel as it was called, was usually 15 or 16 cents, and kerosene, or coal oil as we called it then was around 10 cents. The tractors ran better on tractor fuel then they did on kerosene. If my dad had a good wheat crop coming on we cultivated the corn and plowed the wheat stubble under with tractor fuel. If the wheat crop, which was sold for cash money as soon as it was harvested, was poor the tractors had to burn the kerosene because that was all a poor hill farmer could afford..When shutting down it was a good policy to shut the main tank off a ways from where you were going to park it. When the engine started sputtering, you reached down quickly turned on the gas tank. Then when you got it parked, you gronded the mag with the spark advace lever. Next time you started it, carb was full of gasoline and it was ready to go.
