I have a 1940 h serial #14587 it has the small pto shaft, but it also has the transmission top like a 1939. Will a pto assembly out of a later model h with the regular size shaft interchange. Thanks for your time.

If you are going to mow, you need a over run coupler. You can buy them that go from 1 1/8 to 1 3/8. The best place to find them is New Holland stores. All the old 8 N Fords had the 1 1/8 shaft.

No,In order to put in a later style you would also have to change the counter shaft in the transmission. There was three different styles of pto's in the H. The first was from serial no. 501 to45613. The next one was from 45614 to 117999 and the third was from 118000 and up.The early ones just notched into a grove on the back of the counter shaft. The next two were engaged by sliding on splines on the back of the counter shaft. You can get an adapter that will change the pto from 1 1/8 to 1 3/8.
