I am trying to figure out why my cub won't fire.
My DAD is gone and he had it rigged using a 12vlt
bat, resistor ballast, and a coil. The wire from the bat goes to the ballast and then to the + side of the coil. A wire from the - side goes
to the dist on the magneto. I have current all the way to the coil and to the magneto but I have no fire at the plug. Could it be the coil
and how can I test?
Thanks,
WOD

If thats a Magneto converted to an external coil then it will not have a dust cover there will be a plate with three screws that hold it on over the points and condenser. Also in my opionion I would replace the condenser if the points dont look to bad but Condensers will go bad just sitting it happens on all small engines as well or older ones that is the newer are electronic. But anyhooo if its a mag and you took the rotor off did you get it timed corectly when you put it back??? MagMan

I agree with Old, likely the points are glazed over. You should not be reading voltage at the negative side of the coil unless the points are open or glazed over. They hardly ever stop with the points open.

I'd guess that you need to replace the points, sounds like you haven't look in there at them, points get bad in a year or so of running. You should also replace the condenser at the same time you replace the points.

Thanks for the advice. I pulled the dist cover
and rotor button off but did not go any farther.
I guess the points are behind that 2nd cover aren't they? Is there a condensor in there too?

Thanks

Should be able to find them at NAPA, Case/IH. Or almost any good parts store or tractor place.

I got my points and condensor on ebay under $10. Good place to get them if you use ebay.

Ok,,,I looked at the existing points and saw little spark. I then cleaned them with fine sandpaper and the spark got better. Now,
My question is, if there was spark there, why
was none getting to the plugs? Does this mean the condensor is bad?

You probably wouldn't get a spark at the points if the condenser was bad. You may have a bad/cracked dist/mag cap. That will stop the spark from getting to the plugs.

Well, Here is where I am. I now have spark at the plugs. The plugs are old..so I'm going to replace them. It still won't start. I want you guys to double check my procedure here:
1) pulled the rotor button off.
2) pulled the plate off (has a little gear in it) off that covers the points.
3) cleaned them and noticed a mark on the little gear. Timing mark I guess.

4) well, there was no mark on the rotor button gear. But on the outside of the rotor button
there is what looked like a mark to me. So I matched that up with the little gear mark and put it back together. At least now I have spark. My question is, Did I do the timing procedure correct?

Thanks,
WOD
