Haven"t been on the site for a while cause all was going well and been busy with the new farm, LOL.

All going well except for yesterday that is. I was bringing my 414 to the back of the barn and the bucket caught a high spot on the ground and I managed to tear the bucket apart and bend the tilt ram rod. I was sure the bucket was raised high enough and I still don't know how this happened. Now I"m not concerned with the bucket since it was badly rusted out but ram rod needs to be repaired.

Can the rod be heated and unbent or am I looking at a replacement? Thanks in advance.

Motorcycle forks are straightened all the time. A nearby shop straightens them in a hydraulic press and chucks them in a lathe to check runout. Final adjustments are probably done in the lathe but I am not sure.

Mike, Hope things are going well for you up on the farm! As far as the ram goes, you need to take it apart and find a hydraulic press and some v-blocks to straighten that ram out. I have seen my farmer neighbor use his log splitter and have it work, but very tricky and not much controll such as a hand operated hyd press. Do you have a local machine shop, I would think that is your best bet.

Thanks Scotty,

Sounds like the ram is repairable. The machine shop is a good idea.

Yes, repairable, but not by the typical farmer fix of "heat it cherry red with the torches and bash it with a hammer." The ram has to be absolutely STRAIGHT, or it'll be tearing seals out of the cylinder.

They'll work surprisingly well with a little bend or bow, but it is important to not put any nicks or marks on the rod.
