I have picked up an old Galion 402 grader. The engine looks the same as what we had in our 300 and 350 years ago. The engine is complete but froze, and am told bad head gasket. I can get a good running engine out of an MD. Are the blocks the same for bolt-up purposes. I'd like to get it because then this old girl would be diesel. But don't want to get the engine if it won't bolt up. Thanks

It may very well be a UD 9 or UD 14 engine that "looks like" a MD engine. Check out numbers on block before assuming anything.

Joseph: I think you should check this one out. You said and I quote you," looks the same as what we had in out 300 and 350 years ago." If your talking 30,40 or 50 years ago, and just going from memory and by looks, yes a 300 or 350 engine could look much like an M or 400 engine. Start looking for part numbers, engine serial numbers, etc. then you will know for sure.

As Nat said the H-350 engine is physically smaller than the M-450 engine, therefore the bolt patterns will be different. H-350/M-450 engines are very similar in appearance but do not interchange, at least not in tractors. Also, although the tractor and grader engines were basically the same, the grader engines were usually "over axle" engines, meaning that the engines were mounted on top of the axle and transmission. I have no idea whether an MD engine will work--first you need to find out if the grader has an H or M type engine.

The H/300/350 engine is not the same as an M engine. They're the same basic design, but two different sizes.

The engine's size should be stamped or cast in the block.
