In the process of removing my 300U's shift assy,I was surprised to see the mounting plate was broke in half.I surmised that the bolts forward on the plate loosened up and the movement created when shifting cracked the cast plate.I never would have known it was broken when bolted down because it was less than a hairline crack(actually it wasnt visible at all).Wonder how many others have this and dont even know it.Thankfully I bought a complete used shift assy so its not a big deal. And yes,the original shifter has excessive wear on the edges that have "rounded" off the edges of the contact area. The used shifter has very little.Obviously my Ute was used a LOT.

I see that the replacement shift assy I got is beefier than the original one. There are ribs cast into the top of the plate, whereas the original was flat.I think IH knew there was a problem there.Supposibly the "new" unit was also off a 300U,so if thats correct, sometime during 1955 or 1956 IH changed their casting design. If you have a 300/300U check yours....does yours have a reinforcing "rib" or "boss"?

Question.....once you remove the shifter assy,is it possible to remove and change the shift rails/forks? Or does the entire top of the trans need to come off?

You'll have to remove the top cover to remove rails.
