Tyler, You don"t indicate what year your H is, but it is entirely possible that it came new with an oil pressure gauge and an amp gauge if it came with lights, and had no water gauge. I"ve seen many H"s and M"s of both pre, and post WWII vintage that came sans water temp gauge. The right side hole in the hood where the water gauge would have been had a sheet metal cover. As far as being able to start your tractor, an oil pressure gauge is preferable, to know whether you are indeed getting proper pressure, plus without gauges, you need to plug all the sending sensor ports before running the engine.

If the oil pressure gauge was removed, did they think to plug up the oil line ? If not, you could literally see if you have any oil pressure. Best bet would be to stick any old pressure gauge on it so you know where you are. No sense needlessly wrecking the crank or cam. If it has not run for years, take the valve cover off and pour a pint of oil over the push rods and lifters.

You can get by without water temperature, because you can tell if it gets hot -- I would sure like an oil pressure gauge, though. Change the oil, make sure you have fuel flow. Depending on how long it has been since it ran, squirt some oil in the cylinders and let it sit a while. It would be good to pull the plugs and crank it over for a while to make sure everything is lubricated. You might pull the valve cover and see how much crud is inside, same with the oil pan. On the other hand, if it has run in the past few months, just start it, although if you are going to use it, it is still a good idea to clean everything up.
