The tractor is a 1964 IH-140 6 volt. It was running fine when parked in the shop a week ago. Now it has no spark. I pulled a plug wire and grounded a new plug to the tractor. No spark when I turned it over.

Anything simple and easy to check for?

As a side note, the same thing happen years ago with a 140 that I borrowed from a neighbor. We finially gave up trying to get it started. We were towing it to his house with a chain. I was steering the tractor and decided to try one last thing. I dropped it into four gear and it immediately started.

Coincidence or a trick that might work again?

Check for loose or broken wire. Do you have 6v getting onto your coil? Is there power on one side of the points?

Use an ohm meter to see if you have current to the distributer with the switch on. If so, then you may have a points or condenser issue. I have had a wire to break behind the battery and the switch area of my 1961 140 that kept mine from starting and running once. The points could be shorted to ground at the distributer also. My brother has a super A that has to have the points filed sometimes if it sets for a long period. If only he would change them. Good luck with your tractor.

Instead of filing the points, after which they'll NEVER be as good as they were with the original factory finish, get a strip of clean white paper cardstock and draw it through the (closed) points several times to remove gunk and corrosion.

Then, rotate the engine over until the points are open, and finish the job with a squirt of electrical contact cleaner, to remove any lint from the paper strip. Alow the cleaner to evaporate before attempting to again check for spark.

It might, but I'd try a condenser and cleaning (or replacing) the points with a point file.
