I was looking at this injection pump that I took off the 460. I removed both pieces of the broken shaft today. How hard are the pump shafts to turn on a normal working pump? Is it supposed to spin freely, or do they spin with some effort or pressure? This one is fairly tight. The head is not siezed.

Re: 460 Diesel Injection Pump Timing? in reply to Ron Smith, 06-12-2005 18:44:57
Thanks. I talked to the guy at the pump shop today. When it is ready to go back on, I know I will need to line up the timing marks through the window on the side for the pump timing, but where or how do I set the engine to match up with the pump? I suspect there is a mark on the fly wheel and I'll need to rotate to the mark to get it set in the correct position. Does anyone know how this is done? Thank you.

Aces is right on what to do, otherwise it is very easy to put it on 180 out of time. It will run that way but no power.

Ron the timing karks are on the front pully on the 460. I would take the valve cover off and look at the valves when the intake on number one closes you will start # 1 on compression and then go to the degree of timing on the pully I thought TDC, Line the marks up on the pump.

Rebuild the pump, or salvage the tractor.

If the shaft broke, likely the head seized, at leat momentarily. Do yourself a favor, and get the pump checked out, as next time someting else may break in the timing gear train!
