My Farmall Super M starts easily and runs well for about five minutes. When under a load, the engine surges, dies, surges, dies, etc. I cleaned the fuel tank and bowl and blew all the lines with compressed air. I tried a new vented gas cap to no avail. I gave it a complete tune-up, but have not cured the problem. There seems to be a "popping" in the exhaust. Burnt valves or bad carb? Should I check the compression and if so, what should the readings be?

Open the main adjusting screw ccw one full turn
on the carburetor. Check the valve lash. I would adjust them to .020" cold until you get the engine to run ok, then readjust them to .017" hot.

There is also a screen in the inlet from the fuel line to the carb that could be dirty

Sounds like you need to do a carb rebuild. Back fire to me means its running very lean which is a carb problem

I was hoping it needed only a carb rebuild. Why does the thing seem to run fine for 10 minutes or so? (basically until it gets warmed up)

The carb holds just about that much gas, then if its not getting enough gas it dies. Funny how it will run that long on just a crab full of gas but thats how they are.

Yup, the bowl fills back up while the tractor sits.
