Someone removed the TA operating handle and linkage from my regular 350 long before I bought the tractor. (It does make it easier to climb up on the platform) I'm looking for opinions as to whether it would really be worth the trouble and expense to get the TA back in operation. What are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance...

I find TA to be very helpful when using a loader.I use the TA on my 300U when I am steering around into a snowbank,I then use the regular gear for transport, then use TA again to manuever for another bite. This is far easier than using the clutch and shifting to 1st every time you need to slow down.At first I was somewhat apprehensive to buying a tractor that had TA...I feared the worst...but if it works, use it to your advantage. If it doesnt, fixing it will have its benefits for years to come. Its yet another thing that Ford N series tractors didnt have...and yet another reason that IH tractors are better machines overall.

Illinois Boy I did not read all posts realclose but looks like one thing that was not said. If the TA was in good working order and the lever and linkage taken off the tractor would shaft hard because the TA clutch would not reliese and you did say linkage, so I would think the TA bad or not there at all. So more cost to repaire.

I’m going to back Jim up totally as I have had very similar results. We used them a LOT on our 560 and in 12,000 hours replaced it once! I am going to add that you need to make the decision as to if the benefits of having the ability to go to a lower gear range on the fly is worth the money and effort it will take to repair or install yours. That has to be your call. I know that if I used a tractor for pulling anything especially a PTO driven implement like a mower I would definitely have it working.

Just my 2 cents.

My dad purchased a 350ute in 1957. It has seen continuous use using the TA 4 or 5 times per round in the field plowing, mowing, bushhoging, and snow plowing with a 9' 2/3-1/3 vplow. The tractor has had a set of dome pistons and big bore sleeves and one clutch. We have never had the TA apart. It has never slipped. It has only required minor adjustments throughout its life. It is a time and equipment saving device. Preventing the lugging of the engine in tough pulling clay knobs. In addition the clutch and gearbox are treated to fewer full power stops and starts with the plow in the ground. Last item: when using road gear starting with the TA back, then going to direct when up to speed saves a crunchy shift from 4th to 5th, (Fifth is a narrow toothed easily ruined gear in the trans).
Id put it in operation with what ever the effort/expense it takes. We had no one tell us anything about the TA when the tractor was new, and the only caution was to not let the tractor go more than 1/3 faster than the direct ground speed in any gear when the TA was back. We used the thing mercylessly. My Bro has a 400 its TA went out about a year ago (one way clutch) it will be fixed this summer. Gotta have it.

I fully agree with Jim Nicholson. The TA is one IH's most usefull options. It allows you to run in a higher gear and slow without shifting for the tough spots. This is not only for plowing, but for mowing, baling, or any heavy load going up and down hill.

Never had one blow, but never abused it either.

You do realize that you're supposed to mount the tractor from behind, don't you?

There are three reasons why the TA lever would be removed as detailed in other replies:
1. No TA from the factory. It was optional.
2. TA slips on the low side or was removed entirely. Need to replace T/A. Expensive fix, but worth the effort IMHO.
3. Owner didn't want the help to use/abuse it. Could be the help pulled it once on a downhill and blew it up... Cheapest fix because all you need is the lever and linkage, available at many/most/any tractor salvage operation.

I'd get the lever and linkage, if the TA is still in the tractor, set it up and see if it works.

My dad did that with all our smaller tractors (656 on down) - when your operators are as young as 7 years old there are lots of potential for abuse and misuse.

I have heard that sometimes the handle was removed simply to prevent the hired hands from abusing the TA. Particularly in operations where the TA was not needed or even necessary.

Its pretty likely that the TA mechanism failed in the low range and with the handle removed it just stays locked in the high range. TA is handy when you need more torque, but you can survive without it too. When my father bought our 350D used in 1961, it already had a blown TA and to this day we never had it fixed. We've plowed, tilled, mowed, raked, baled all these years without TA.

Allen,
Trade tractors?? What if the tractor is not used for draft purposes very much or at all. I have a 300 that has had to TA inop since 1985 or so, just bales hay and bush hogs. doing the clutch next year and was thinking of redoing the TA or just going with the eliminater kit, haven't decided yet. Have another one that the TA works like a champ don't really use it that much either in these hills, sure dont want to pull it back going down a hill. I'm to old for that excitement.

SOme of these responses piqued my curiosity. I have used the TA on a 300U and it works, but if you go down a little incline, it acts like the TA isn't in gear just the normal range of the transmission. What do you think causes this. Thanks.
