The opening is for a kerosene/distillate starting tank, very common in the 40's.

That's the hood off an A. "Culti-vision" is not a tractor model, and it wasn't optional equipment. It describes the offset operator's platform on Cubs, As, Bs, and Super As.

The fourth hole is either something the previous owner cut in it for some ungodly reason, OR the A was a model that burned petroleum distillate fuel (i.e. naptha), and the extra hole is for the small gas tank that was used to start the tractor and warm it up.

I was not aware that you could get a distillate A, though.

Nat, All letter series Farmalls were available in gasolene, kerosene or distilate versions. I own a 1940 A distilate. Not only did it have the auxillary gasolene tank for starting, but they also were equipped with radiator shutters, special manifold, and the carburetor was configured with a drain cock on the bottom to purge the distillate or kerosene out of the line after use to enable easier starting when they were next started.

Distillate engines had a starter tank with gas in it
