Has anyone ever overhauled the steering sector on a C, Super C, or 200? My Super C has always leaked a little, and now it is leaking a lot. Gonna have to put new seals and bushings in it I guess. Hopefully the I&T book will show me how.

After it's back togethrt. I'd suggest you use something other than 90w gear oil. I use something called Snapper "00". It is a gear lube for mower gearboxes & will lube as well as 90W and be less likely to leak. I've also read on here that John Deere Corn Head Lube works well too, although I haven't tried it.

I've done two of these so far. You can get by without the bearing press. Some appropriate size oak blocks and a hammer will do the trick to get the bearings off. They are not on that tight. I had a problem with one of the main steering shafts. That's the part that the big bottom seal runs on and also is the part that the lower front bolster that holds the wheels bolts to. The shaft had a groove worn in it and I was afraid the new seal would leak as a result. I tried to get a machine shop to fix it for me, but they wanted nearly $200 to turn it down and make a collar and rework it. I ended up gettin a speedy sleeve for it. That was a bit tricky, as the installation tool that came with the sleeve was not deep enough. I made a tool to install the sleeve using PVC pipe. Put the shaft piece in the freezer overnight and then plenty of lubricant and the sleeve went on easily. That's been two years ago, and no leaks yet as far as I know. That tractor is in regular service at a rabbit farming operation pulling a manure spreader.

While I was trying to upload the photo, pharmall beat me to it. We just did the whole deal on my son's '49 C, and here is a picture of what it will look like all cleaned up and ready to go back together. Remember, you need to get two gaskets and one seal for it when you order the parts. I took the picture of it while we were waiting for the second gasket to come in! I forgot to take any other pictures when it was apart, oh well!

By the way, pharmall, we got the drawbar all drilled out on Friday night....it looks great. We just need to do some grinding to make it look polished up a bit. Thanks for the pics and measurements!

Once you have removed the steering gear you will need a bearing puller and a three point puller to remove the bearings in order to replace the bottom seal and the center gasket. Ain't all that bad but a press would be a big help when puttin it back together. Good luck.

Just started this job yesterday on a "48C. The oil seal just in front of the u-joint was leaking pretty bad. The I&T manual spells it out well, and there is a good diagram of the C/SC assembly.

Used a pipe wrench to take out the bearing retainer on the front, and the worm shaft turned out easily. The shaft is quite worn in the area of the seal. It will probably need a speedi-sleeve. The toughest part was gettting the pin out of the end of the worm shaft where it attaches to the u-joint. One end of the pin has a head, so I had to scrath around on the paint to find the right end to push it out. Used a nail punch ground flat to get it started, and then a nail ground flat to push it out the rest of the way.

Should get around to the vertical shaft tomorrow. Jeff
