Shorted it out

Was doing some work with my 400D and went to shut it down by switching over to gas. Turned on the ignition switch, switched it over, noticed the ammeter go to the far left side, and the tractor shut down on it's own. Smoke was rolling out of the dash.

Pulled back the dash and noticed a short from the lug of a wire connected to the ignition "Bat" terminal to one of the hydraulic linkages. Evidently the operation of the linkage wore a hole in the insulation and shorted. Now there is no power. The dash fuse is OK.

Looked at the wiring diagram and the circuit runs from the battery, through the ammeter, to the voltage regulator ("Bat" terminal), and then through the regulator, out the "L" terminal, then to the ignition switch "Bat" terminal (the one that had the shorted wire connected).

My guess is I burned up the ammeter or the voltage regulator. Any suggestions?

Just so you all know, if you care, I nuked both the ammeter and voltage regulator. Lots of black stuff inside them. Replaced them both, now she is back to good.

I said enough with this in the future, so put an in-line fuse going to the dashboard. No more of that nonsense.

WOW, I would have thought one of them would have servived, but big batteries can source alot of current. Was the fuse size the size of max amps for the ammeter + a little?

Before the short there was no fuse protecting the panel, except for the light circuit, I believe. That is the way they originally wired it. The power came from the battery, to the solenoid, from that solenoid terminal to the ammeter, through the ammeter, then to the voltage regulator, then to the "Bat" terminal on the ignition switch. I installed a fuse right at the solenoid terminal feeding the ammeter.

I first replaced the VR, started the tractor and did a little work, noticed the ammeter was not registering, and replaced it with another one I had. It registered correctly.

Seems a flaw in their design.

Thanks for your help.

Jumper a wire across the ammeter posts and if everything ok then its the ammeter. If not must be reg.
