My dad showed me the proper way to close a cold shut when I was a kid. He's gone now and I can't remember his secret. I have some old chains of his and the ends are put on with cold shuts that look really good. Mine look like a drunk or a child closed them. Or do you all cheat and use the chain hooks with a pin and cotter key? Dave.

I've always squeezed them shut in a vise. As others said, sometimes you need to turn the cold shut the other way in the vise to bend the end to align the eye. Nothing wrong with using the hooks with the clevis pins and cotter keys. I think those might actually be stronger than the cold shuts.

Bob M - I squeeze 'em shut in a large vice. Can also close them using a large hammer and vice grips. (Grab the "eye" in the vice grips to hold the eye flat on a hard surface.)

The vice method is the better way to go....

I too have found the vise to be the best method. Sometimes the eye is not aligned correctly and the vise is helpful to push the rod end into alignment with the eye. I force the pin end out slightly through the eye and then weld over that end with a stick welder and 6011 rod- 80 to 100 amps.
