Hi,
I recently purchased an IH Farmall 706 (1963?) tractor for my husband. It was suppose to be mechanically sound. When I purchased an operator manual (separately) and became familiar with the tractor, I discovered what I believe is a problem. When I try to shift into HI range, it makes a growly, grindy noise when I let the clutch out and pops out of HI range. What am I doing wrong? Is this a major problem, and if so, what would be the fix and approx. cost and effort to repair? Low range, reverse, TA and all the gears seem to work just fine. Thanks for helping out a damsel in distress!
Be Well
JB

Well it could be somrthing as simpal as the as i call them the cub cadet tierod end on the shifter or just woren linkage or it could be more seirous as i can not see the tractor for myself , i know thes tractors inside and out and i have fixed may of shifting problems on them 90 % of the shifting problems start from clutch adjustment problems . When everything is correct on and 06 they will shift with two fingers . Pull the cowel off and look at the linkage on top and see if there is any movement that should not be there everything should be reasonably tight, no loose nuts no ware on the headed pins down below and no wobble on the shifter shaft that goesinto the top of the range transmission . IF ya got rev. then i would have to say that the shifter may not be set correctly or if that is not the case then it may be seirous and get into the pocketbook. Now if you bought the tractor as to being good then i would say something to the seller that it is not so good and if you bought it from a dealer then i would make him stand behind it and hold him to it . Most of the problems with the 06 seires in the shifting department is not being able to find reverse . I do not know where you are from but if you were reasonably close to me i would be glade to take a look. I and in Norht east Ohio.

Thats in the range transmission, and if its just a bent or loose shifter fork, it can be fixed after removing the large rearend top cover. Kinda heavy.

Now that cover is not that big and it only weighs around 40 lbs, This one is a tough one to figure as rev. is the big problem with them not sure on this one it just may be something got jamed up on top and not letting the shifter go up far enough.
