Changed the oil in my B today with only about 10 hrs of use the past year. The oil was dark black like it hadn't been changed for a long time. Is this an indication of a mechanical problem? It had 10W-40 and replaced with straight SAE 30 oil. Also, this engine had a complete rebuild two years ago. THanks

Thanks for replies. It was interesting reply that sounds like sucking air. The engine does surge like a vacuum leak. I checked around carb and intake with propane but found nothing. If I rev engine up runs pretty good. Surge is usually at idle. Sometimes at mid throttle will run well then stumble and clear up. Could my intake manifold have a hole inside between intake and exhaust ports? How could I check this? I don't know if related, but a month ago I over heated it. Started smoking like burning oil out exhaust. I shut it down right away and had radiator boiled out at a shop. Has not overheated since but now will smoke at start up and then cleans up. Sometimes driving will smoke a bit every now and then. Any ideas? Thank you all for your help.

We always change oil before we "put them to bed" in the fall. Then all the junk is washed out before it sits for a long time. If it was me, I would take the pan off and clean it up and then do a couple of short interval drains just to get things cleaned out.

If you're using detergent oil that's probably
normal. I would check the odor of the oil for containing gasoline. If the engine isn't puffing
out black smoke it's probably ok. Hal

I forgot to say that the filter is not very old. I thought there might be a restriction there also.
Sounds like it is sucking in air from somewhere.

Was the oil filter cannister full of oil? Short running periods on the engine will make the oil turn dark. Those engines do not have full flow filters like the filters on your car or truck.

PS: I usually change my tractor's oil every spring. I don't use it for mowing anymore and its a good way to get some excercise using the hand mowers. I only use the tractor for plowing the garden and for plowing snow. When I mowed
I changed the oil more often. Still going strong after 34 years.

Agreed, the short running times are hard on oil (and tractor). Just enough mosture can collect through condesation to make it look sludgey and black.

This not only can occur with tractors, but in you automobiles too. Short running periods are very hard on engines, they need to be worked.

Your semi's that run the highways put 300,000 or more miles without any major problems. Hal
