This is going to sound very naive - but here goes...
Pull the throttle back on my 350 and black smoke comes out of the exhaust. Is the carb to rich or too lean? For the life of me, I can't remember...
(I'm thinking too rich - at least fuel wise!)

I know... DUHHHHH HHHHH!

Embarrased in Illinois...

I like to look at the end of the exhaust pipe. If it has a lot of black carbon is running too rich (or sucking oil). If its white or light gray it's too lean. A nice charcoal grey colour is best.
Also check your pulgs. They will foul up easily if its too rich.

I thought I heard that it meant that a new Pope had not been chosen yet.☺ Otherwise, sounds pretty normal to me too.

Black is rich, but if it only does it when you yank the throttle, I'd consider that more or less normal, wouldn't you?

Yep, pretty much normal unless it is excessive. Just a little means the engine is getting enough.

Thanks guys - just blows black when I hit the gas - otherwise no smoke at all. Normal? Well - at least something is "normal" around my place - gives me hope!!!

Check for black smoke when at full throttle and steady full load. Lean it out until yuou don't get the smoke at the maximum load you are pulling.
