I was brush hogging a field that hasn"t been brush hogged yet this year so it was really high. Mostly grass and weeds.I was about half way done with the field when the PTO shaft slowed down and I could hear a strange sound coming from the back of the tractor. I have let some of the fields get this high other years and never had this problem before. Once I got back over the cut areas the shaft picked up to normal speed. I only went maybe about 50 yards with the PTO slipping like that, hope I didn"t ruin anything.? I know that there are two screws back by the shaft that can be ajusted, but I don"t know how. Can anybody tell me how to adjust them? Or what I should do. thanks a million guys!!

Ken: It's been a long while so I'm just going from memory. One of those screws sets the brake that holds pto shaft from turning when not engaged. The other sets bands that force planetary and pto shaft to turn. Loosen the locknuts on screws and place the engage lever near half way position between the two notches. Then tighten those screws until you have about 1/16" free travel of lever between the two. Play with this until you have the free travel at the midway point.

Having said this, I must warn you that you may be too late. I have never seen one of those pto units slip but what it needed rebuilding. Problem is the unit probably was slipping hours before you noticed it, maybe by 5 to 10 rpms. 5 or 10 rpms would create a lot of heat, but as it happened gradually, it wouldn't be noticed at first.

I have never rebuilt one, always shipped them off to the IH dealer. There are guys on here who have rebuilt those units.
