Main shaft Bearings wobble in Toxowick Dryer

I have a Tox-o-wick batch dryer (500 bushel) which drives off of a tractor PTO. The PTO drives a three foot 1 1/2 (approx) inch diameter shaft back in underneath of the dryer. The shaft runs the fan, recirculating auger, the stirring arms and the loading augers. These components are all ran by belts. The shaft is supported on each end by bearings supported in bearing holders. The bearing comes out of the holder by turning the bearing sideways. My question is when you turn the shaft slowly you can see both bearings move in and out ever so slightly at the top. Is this caused by a bent shaft? Bad bearings? Worn bearing holders? Improper aliment? If the shaft is slightly bent can a machine shop straighten it? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I'll bet they are self-aligning bearings, held to the shaft with eccentric locking collars. If the shaft is a few thousandths under nominal size, the action of the eccentric locking collars being engaged with the bearing, and locked to the shaft will "cock" the bearing a bit on the shaft, and it will wobble as you describe.

If this is the case, if the shaft is not badly worn under the bearings, for the speed at which the PTO runs, and the average hours of use, likely it will go for YEARS without trouble.

It doesn't look good, and it's not desirable, but none the less, it may be "normal".

If you need a new shaft, and new bearings, you might as well run it like it is and discover you are worrying over nothing.

If you don't have excessive vibration while it is running it is most likely OK. The pillow block bearings are designed for a little misalignment.

I think you're referring to pillow block bearings.
They're used to support a rotating shaft. They usually have very close tolerances. Sounds like yours may be worn. To check for a bent shaft I would remove it from the bearings and roll it over a flat surface. If it's bent I would replace
it. Your local machine shop can probably make a new shaft from round stock. I would take those pillow block bearings along too and have them check for wear. They may be able to furnish new bearings or tell you what and where to get new ones. Hal
