IH 1466 - steering - MVC problems

Having a problem with a 1974 IH 1466. The steering gets very stiff and/or jerky except at very high RPMs. Checking the flow divider valve on the side, we always find it stuck tight. Working the valve with an EasyOut in the cup end (where the spring is inserted) we are eventually able to free the spool, remove it and swab the inside of the valve body. After reassembling, the steering usually works normal for a while.

Dealer has installed a new MVC pump and MVC kit (o-rings and gaskets, not sure about springs) about 1 month ago. The problem recurred after running a couple of days.

Breaks continue to operate normal.
All hydraulics operate normal.
Clutch assist is blocked off preventing any flow through this (thought maybe this was interfering with the steering).
Dealer installed the TA removal kit a couple of years ago, when it was in for a transmission R&R.

Can anyone offer any suggestions on what to do next?

Well since ya can't get the new flow control valve anymore as we are working on the same problem with the 706 and now also the 1066 . There is a burr or somethingthat is causing this problem . You can get a pice of 5/16ths rod and cut a slot in the end and take some 400 grit emery cloth and use a drill and lighty hone the bore and rinse out with brake kleen and repolish the spool this should slide freely in the bore with some Hy tran on it . You may also have something starting to put filings in the oiland causeing it to stick . My problemis a sored flowdivider on the 706 and not sure on the 10 as i have not pulled it yet maybe tonight if i can get up some go power this heat and long days at work moving oversized loads are doing me in . One othere thing , when the dealer had the MCV off the mechanic could have warped it if he just tighted the bolts and not toqured them as should be done this can warp the MCV.

I'll be watching this post because I occasionally have the same problem with my 14. There seems to be no rhyme-or-reason as to when it might act up. When it happens it is usually immediately on start up. It acts like it won't take prime. I also find that if I shut it off and remove the flow divider and clean it up it will start working. I tried running it two gallons over full on oil, but that didn't have any affect.

I notice that the spool in the flow divider is a little scored and scratched. I was surprised at how mutch grime and dirt was in the bottom of the rear-end and transmission last time I was in there. I do not think the filter system is all that efficient, because I change the filter often.

Next time i'm inside the tranny or rear-end I'm gonna clean it up again and change all of the fluids. Maybe dirt is causing the sticking spool?? Anyway, I'm sure there is someone here who has fixed this problem. Good luck.
