Thorns+Front Tires=:(

I ran the hay tedder yesterday and that evening I noticed the front tires on the H looked a little low. I needed my old H to pull the rake the next day so I thought I'd better just get the patch kit out. NINE patches later (five ont the left, four on the right) I THINK I've got them fixed.

My front three-rib tires are four-ply. Those little thorns will just poke right through them. I know someone has had this conversation here before, but I can't find it. I would like to have a set of front tires that look fairly original, but are more plys or heavier. Has anyone found a heavier tire that still looks, more or less, correct?
Thanks,
Paul

Meant to get back to your post earlier but just been too busy. I don't know your tire size but I had a similar problem with my Ford 5610 wide front tractor I use for a lot of loader and brush hogging work. When working around thorn type bushes I was getting slow leaking flats almost daily. The culprit for the most part was gooseberry or rose thorns. Mentioned it to a couple of folks and they told me of a tire store that carried recapped 10-12 ply steel belted truck tires with an implement tread. I had new tri-ribs on the tractor at the time and there is just a lot of very thin rubber between the ribs on tractor tires. These recaps have grooves that are only a half inch wide at most with the balance of the tread quite thick rubber. They were in a size 7.50 X 16" which was a perfect fit for the Ford. These worked great for me and haven't had a flat since. They don't grip in a turn quite as well as the ribbed tractor tires but also don't tear up the turf as much either. I think the extra thick rubber along with the steel belts have solved my problem. Just thought I would throw this in along with the other responses you received. Good luck.

the company site is multi-seal.com
There is a good dealer in ohio at preventflats.com sealers work better in tubeless tires.
The company claims their product is being used in the trucks in Iraq. cost $269 for 5 gallon pail

I also have a thorn problem, locust trees. NAPA and several others sell products to put in tube type tires to seal punctures. NAPA product costs just over $8.00 a bottle. The product works very well. Once installed I have had no further problems with flat tires.

Berryman tire sealer stopped the flats on my Tractor, trailers, and lawn mowers. It works with tubes, and the jug comes with the pump to put it in with.

Hey Paul,

You baling locust saplings or blackberry bushes. I heard the hay crop is low in Illinois but baling thorns is no way to sell hay. Are you trying to capture a certain market ? Possibly goat farmers ? I heard the goats like beer cans, you can bale all the ones I have uip here.

Hey, how is your rake working, like it ? Gemplers has a prodcut for the thorns, good stuff.

They usto make a liner to put in them and that helps a lot with flats. Its also the best way I have ever found to stop thorns. Once the liner is in it rubs the ends off the trhorns and they never get to the tube.

That's what the site has I tried to post the link to. The liners cost $26.00 a tire. I never thought about the liner rubbing the thorn tip off. Thanks for the input.

They work very good, even takeing an old tube and cutting it so it lays in the tire will help a lot and even better 2 tubes and as I said the flex of the tire causes the liner or tubes to rub the tips of the throns off and far fewer flats.

Old tires (weathered) are harder than new ones and resist thorns better.

I use the leak stop you install while the tire is depressurized and it works good, I've tried two or three brands. There are some brands rated for tubes.

I have been mounting my tube type tire tubelelss if they are not weather checked.
I put heavy duty Mult-Seal in them. If the tires are old and weather checked on the sidewalls, it won't work. Works really good on tubeless tires. Works good on rear tires too. I have tried different brands of sealent and Mult-Seal seams to be the best. None of them work very good on sidewalls. Have been bush hoging thornapples and tires look like pincushions but still hold air.

SGT K, How about filling those front tires with foam? Sounds like you have a thorny situation!

Go to WalMart or any auto supply and get a couple of areosol cans of the flat sealer stuff. Shoot the tubes full of that stuff. Don't know how it will work for thorns, but it's worked for me on a couple of things.

Any tire shop that handles ag tires will have the 3 rib in the size you need, either 4 ply or 6 ply. I can also tell you that a locust thorn will go right into a 6 ply tire just as easily as a 4 ply. Hedge thorns take a little longer, but will eventually work their way in also.

I hope my link works, they are tire liners that they say adds four to six plys.

They make 6-ply rated tri-rib fronts. You just have to find the right tire shop.

Had a lot of that trouble down here in the Ozark hills, so sent off to that place in Texas and got some big wide 12 ply airplane tires for the front of the M. No flats. Period. Only problem is the tires says right on the sidewall that it is only rated for 225 mph. Kinda cuts down my road gear speed, but no more flats. Harley
