I have a 1950 Cub, last week I had a noise coming from 1st gear when it got hot....I checked the oil level & it was very low...(I also discovered I mistakingly put in hydraulic jack oil when I changed lube last spring)...so, I drained what was in there & mistakingly added too much gear lube (5qrts instead of 3 &1/2pnts).....yesterday I had a mess of gear oil on my barn floor...now, I know I've got a slow leak when @ proper level, but, if I drained it all out one more time & added the right amount, do you folks think I could make it another month or two w/o having to bust it all apart (I know my left rear brake is soaked in gear oil, but, I don't think that should hurt anything)...or, do I take the time now to take it all apart...thanks..Josh in Maine

When my son bought my cub for me a few years ago, and drove it home it leaked oil out opn the brakwe bands also. Found out the previous owner had filled (over-filled) the tranny with auto tans fluid!. We changed the oil andI soaked the brake bands with brake cleaner several times. they work, but not real strong. With the level where it should be it will just seep a little. Also the other day when I drove it on the road the tranny was making a little extra noise, so I drainde the oil (had a bunch of water in it from sitting outside) and refille with 90 w oil. It quieted down a lot.

Josh:

Depending on how badly you need your Cub will determine if you take it apart today or in a month. I waited to fix Ellie -- and I finally got the time to do it.. Should have done it a month ago, it would have been done by now....

You do know that problems can only get worse.. even minor ones like you have.

You also have to remember that Cubs have square cut gears and the nature of the beast is to be a little bit noisy....

Read the Owner's Manual and the GSS-1411 Service Manual at the links I sent you in the email....

That should about cover everything...

Well with the wrong oil in it you may have messed up a bearing or maybe not. As far as the oil on the brake I have seen that before and some times a good spraying of brake cleaner in that area will clean it off good enough to make it work ok for a long time. About all you can do is drain and refill to the right level and give it a go if it makes a lot of noise after its warm I'd open it up if it doesn't I would run it and look later. Also if the oil that you drain has a silver color as in metal in it I'd open it up.

Its been my experience that problems don't usually go away, they tend to get worse. could all of that gear oil cause your brake to slip when you are trying to stop? IF it does then you or a family member could get hurt.
