I've been shopping these around all over lower Michigan and vicinity and I passed on one a couple of months back because it had a pretty good hole in the bell housing. This turned out to be a wrong choice, I guess, because at the tractor show yesterday I was looking at the show tractors and most of the B's and a few A's had the same hole. Can anybody fill me in on why it is there and don't it fill up with hornets?

They fill up with hornets, mouse dung, mud daubers, or whatever else is looking for a home.

There are two holes one on the side for greasing the shaft where the pilot bearing slides and one on the bottom to see the timing marks on the flywheel and both came with covers.

Dixieland is correct, there is an oval shaped hole on the bottom of the bell housing and should have a cover. Over 50 years or so, it may not have survived. Later models had a starter hole that should have a cover too if the starter wasn"t used. FYI, the A is a close cousin and should have the access hole also if you spot the more numerous A.

The only hole I know of is the one used to grease the throw out bearing but there is a clip-in plug for the hole.
