Cub battery backwards

I mistakenly installed the 6 volt battery backwards on a 1950 cub, put the negative to ground. Now the ammeter reads in a constant discharge state and the battery won"t hold a charge, this after properly hooking it up. What do I need to do to get this right. The cub was restored be my late father and myself and means very much to me to get it running. do I need a new generator, voltage regulator? Thanks

Well, the answer is not as complicated as it seems. There is no mystery to 6v systems especially a 6v with a magneto, a cut-out and a generator.

Your problem lies with the generator not being polarized. Whenever you remove the battery or change the polarity of the system you have to renew the system. The generator does not know whether your system is positive ground (good) or negative ground (in this case, not good).

You need to short out temporarily the Batt and the Gen terminals on the cutout.

Polarize the generator by very briefly shorting/jumping the cut-out BAT and GEN terminals together after everything is connected - but before you try to start it.

You might want to check out the Cub Manual Server.... for the Owners Manual and the Service Manuals.

Master, my bet is you damaged (may just have a relay contact stuuck or burned) the Voltage Regulator (if you have one instead of a cutout relay) but the Gen is likely fine. I would repair or get a new VR or cutout relay (whatever it has) and re polarize the Gen to be safe then see what happens. If the ammeter reads a constant discharge (with battery now in correct) and the Gen gets hot, I suspect its cutout relay contacts are stuck/burned closed which you may be able to unstick then clean/buff/polish and she will work then.

Voltage regulator possibly bad, battery likely bad. Even hooked up wrong, the battery will last a long time. Bigger cables will help also. You need to polarize the generator --use a wire and briefly hold one end on the "Bat" terminal of the regulator touch the other end to the "A" terminal of the generator, you should get a spark, that's it. Your tractor does not care whether it is positive are negative ground, but a factory-type voltage regulator will not last as long if you use negative ground.

Sounds like a voltage regulator. There are no diodes to blow in a generator. Now an alternator....that would be another story.
