706 generator to alternator conversion question...

My father converted our 706 gas years ago to an alternator. He used it every couple of days or so and did not notice a parasitic drain on the battery until he picked up a 686 diesel for everyday stuff. I found the drain, it was the alternator, about 325mA of draw. At that point I found the 1 terminal connected to the battery lug and the 2 terminal connected to the key in a round about way. I noticed that was backwards right away. So I swapped 1 and 2, I still had the drain so I installed a relay to break the circuit when the key was off. So, we fired it up and I checked the battery voltage at half throttle and it was showing 14.18vDC from 1/3 to 1/2 all the way to full throttle. It is regulating but now the amp light will not go out, it is rpm sensitive so it appears that I need to do something different with connection to terminal 1?

Any ideas would be great, once again it does appear to be charging at a very constant 14.18 volts.

Thanks Matt

If its a delco the # 1 wire should go to the switch, but the side if it that on;y has power when swtch is on. The #2 should go to the big ternimal on the alternator. the the big ternimal goes to the amp gauge or battery which ever you have, if no amp guage.

The reason that I went with a relay for the power cutoff was that when I connected to the keyed hot side of the ignition resistor the tractor tended to diesel on when the key was shutoff so there must be some backfeed from the alternator at that point. The amp light worked with the alternator hooked up backwards if that helps.

I forgot to say you also need the amp light or diode in the line from #1 to the switch. Sorry bad case of CRS. With the light in that wire it will keep that from happening.
