Front Wheel Bearings on Farmall M

My M developed a "clunk" that appears to be coming from the front wheels, when going forward or backward (had wife put hand on front wheels while I let it coast forward). I can barely feel it through the steering wheel. The sound/feel is as though something binds, locks then lets go. I removed both wheels and cannot find any broken bearings or debris. The bearings are loose but no rollers have come out. Does this problem sound like a wheel bearing? Some of the races will "spin" in place, but will not come out. The inner bearings will slide out about a quarter inch, but will not slide off the axle. If I replace these, do I need to drive the races out with a punch? Should I use a puller on the bearings? All bearings appear to have adequate lubrication. Thanks for the help.

I'll just about bet the farm that it is the holes in either the hub or the outer rim or both. Over time they will become egg-shaped and a little larger diameter than the bolt and when they go "over center" they will move. About the only way to fix this is replace either the hubs, the rims, or both, or tighten the dickens out of the three wheel bolts and see if this don't work. BTDT,, Harley

I checked the bolts this afternoon and they were indeed not as tight as they should have been. I snugged them all up and no more noise. Thanks alot for the help.

Harley, it used to be that you could take an egged out wheel like that to the local blacksmith and he could make it just like new again. When I was a kid I got to watch this process once. The blacksmith would position a carbon rod from a battery in the hole and then braze around the rod. When he was done the carbon rod could easily be pulled out, leaving a perfect bolt hole.

If the wheel to hub (three bolts) are not an issue, Then the way you have described your bearings is a problem. The inner race shoild be a nice clean finger push onto the spindle. it should turn, but only with a fair grip on it. If the race is easy to spin, and has clearance, either it (not likely) or the spindle (likely) is worn. There should be no sholder to prevent its removal as indicated in your post. The hub should also have the outer race in a tight grip. This grip is a press fit and requires a driver, or patient careful punching around the edges to install, or remove it. Worn spindles and hubs could be repaired (welded up and re-bored to spec) but different parts may be cheaper. If it was used with a loader, and or the grease was never changed, the wear can be on the parts that are not hardened. New bearings are also probably a good idea, as these will be worn to some degree from "walking around" in the parts designed to hold them in place.
I hope it is the wheel bolts.
