Looking at a early farmall 706D (s/n is 1917 or close to that). Any problem areas to check? Tractor has dual pto"s, rebuilt pump/injectors, wide front, about 5000 hours. Engine looks to be the 282.

Thanks,
Ben

We just sold a 706 last year. It was a great tractor. Very heavy (baler and full wagons never pushed it on these dang hills), stout rear-end. High range went out of it though, and it had to be split to fix it (all that to replace a $10 sleeve). Make sure you shift through all the ranges and gears. Would love to have another one if it didn't pull the same stuff. Moved onto a 656, which shifts much better, but it isn't half the tractor of the 706.

When in reverse make sure there are no clicking or unusal noises. If someone dropped the park lock when it was still moving it can break teeth off the reverse gear. Also check to see the glow plug system operates properly and there is no water in oil or oil in water. The 706 is a well built tractor with the shifting linkages being the main if only weakness.

Drive it some shifting range shifter from High to Reverse several times. Make sure it goes in gear all the way, and doesn't jump out.
