I have a 350D row crop. All the sudden it will not even turn over, it has been starting fine, I have changed the battery. My test light shows fire at the battery but no fire going to the starter, when I push the start button the light does not come on when I hold the test light to the wires.

Any help would be appreciated.

Did you ever get the tractor to crank/started? Hal

That's one nice thing about being retired. Use a good volt meter to check for voltage on that battery cable at the starter. Hal
PS: Here's a website for new battery cables.

I had better clarified this before I get some static on the solenoids. Not all cars have the solenoid on the starter. Not sure what Ford uses now, but for a long time they had their solenoid mounted on the wall next to the front fender next to the battery box.

The positive cable from the battery is fastened
to the solenoid, then another battery cable is
run from the solenoid to the starter. When you
twist the key to make a start it energizes the
solenoid allowing the battery voltage to reach the starter. When you release the key the ignition switch is in the run mode and allows voltage to your ignition to keep your car running.

Ford had this same setup back in the 1930's and you could crank and start the car from under the
hood as long as you had the ignition switch on.
They had a starter button on the underside of the solenoid. I have a 1980 Mercury Cougar XR7 and it will become an antique in 3 months. Hal

There's always battery voltage at the starter as long as your battery is fully charged and your battery connections are shiny and tight. It's the same as on your car or truck. It's when you push your starter button or turn a key that energizes the solenoid and cranks your engine. The pinion gear on the starter engages the gear teeth on the flywheel when your solenoid is energized.. Hal

Isn't your battery cable connected to the starter?
When you press your starter button it energizes the starter solenoid that will crank the engine.
Use a screwdriver and short across the solenoid
and see the engine will crank. Make sure the tractor is in neutral and the brakes locked.

If there is no juce at the starter end of the big wire from the battery, the connection at the battery is bad, or the wire is corroded/broken internally. If the juce does not show on the starter side of the system then it is either the solenoid or the pushbutton/key. If the little wire going to the solenoid has voltage when the start button/key is pushed/turned, then the ign key/wires need to be gone over. To test solenoid Put in neutral, set brakes, jump with a 14 ga. wire between the solenoid terminal attached to the battery, and the small solenoid terminal. No crank, the solenoid is suspect, crank and it is the Key/button.
I hope this helps,
JimN

That is correct, I touched the test light to the battery cable on the starter solenoid and the light did not come on.

What does that tell you?

Are you saying there's no voltage on the big battery cable where it connects to the starter?
If that is so, you need to clean all battery connections and where your battery is grounded.
If you have voltage at the big battery cable, short across the solenoid with a screwdriver and see if the engine cranks. Hal

Agreed, the problem is not your starter button, either one of your cables has burned out or you have lost a contact point.

My guess would be a bad switch and or starter. I'd pull the starter and have it checked and also pull the switch and check it

I forgot to mention I had the starter checked and it was ok. I am going to get a new starter button. Hopefully that is it, I like to start with the simple(cheaper)things first.

Thanks for the help.

I think you're barking up the wrong tree.

If you are not getting voltage at the big fat cable on the starter, it's NOT the starter switch. Touch one end of the tester to the fat cable, and the other to anywhere on the frame. It should read between 12 and 13 Volts, or it should at least light up, depending on what kind of tester you have.

No light, no volts. You can change starter switches until you're blue in the face, and die of old age, and it won't fix the problem.

Thanks for all the input, I am printing it out and taking it with me when I work on the tractor.

These tractors are VERY rare in the Mississippi Delta so I am in the dark sometimes. My father ran an IH store for 20 years and had never seen a 350D until we bought this one.

Again, thanks for the input, I will let you know what happens.

CP

Nat is right on the money on checking for voltage
at the starter on the battery cable at the starter. No voltage present you either have corroded cable ends or corrosion inside the battery spades. If they're crimped I would install a new cable with soldered ends. Hal

Yep always start with the cheap stuff first that way the high priced stuff isn't so much of a hurt on the back pocket or at least it doesn't seem like it. LOL
