Which Type of Duals

My 826 has the wide axle. I'm considering upgrading to duals at some point. I see the types that attach with turnbuckle hooks and the types that slide onto the axle like the original wheel. The turnbuckle types are very common and cheaper, but are they OK? I can see some potential problems with them that wouldn't occur with the original type. Any thoughts?

Jim: I had both and never cared for the clamp on type. The axle type were on my 1066 and I never had them off. Had a clamp on set for 560 and 656. Getting them lined up and keeping tight was my main complaint. Then one must remember, it is awfully easy to keep something tight that is never off, and even less strain on back getting it lined up. I may have felt different if I had been removing duals from 1066 as often.

I have seen a few hubs destroyed with snap on duals. I have also heard of breaking axle off between duals with hub type. I suspect allowing tractor to run with something loose was problem in both cases.

Like you say, the clamp-on duals are cheap and easy to find. I see them on bigger tractors than an 826, just saw a pair on a JD 4440, which has around 130 horsepower, but like the guys said below, you have to check the clamp or turnbuckle tension often. The hub-style duals are in pretty high demand right now, the pullers like them for the pressed-steel wheels. Nice thing about those is that you can set the tread width exactly where you want it and change it easy. They"re so much easier to install and remove, too. I definetly prefer the hub-style.

For traction, the solid duals are better, for floatation then the "snap on" ones are better

I'd like to add another thought. With the axle mount duals you can add spacers between to move the wheels out further if desired. I was running 12" spacers on my 966 on 30" rows to allow the duals to straddle the row for planting and spraying. As Allen said, I ran them to reduce compaction and with the spacers in, I was only doing light pulling like planting, spraying, and spreading dry fertilizer.

Jim,

The only reason I use the duals is to get the weight of the tractor up off the soil to reduce the chance of compaction, so I use the snap on kind.

However, I would think that if you are gonna put a lot of "pull" against 'em that the axle mounts are better because of the lessened stress at that axle clamp.

I have had a lot of experience with both types with the purpose being both flotation and traction. I have never had trouble with either. Of course I have never had the clamp on (eyebolt type) on more than 115 hp. I do prefer the type with the hub, I have found them easier to take on and off and they don't seem to need retightened after a day. BTW I have a set of duals and hardware (18.4 x 38). The tires are worn but lots good enough for flotation duals. $200 Cdn in SW Manitoba.

with anything up to and including my 966, i've never had a problem with the clamp on type. they are less costly than the bolt on style, too.

The clamp on duals will break the bolts on your tractor hubs if you aren't careful, pull the tractor hard and let TA go, and they will break , axel mounted hubs solved the problem so will wedge type tractor wheels like on 856's
