I have a freshly restored '63 Farmall Cub that I am using to grade sand on a beach. I am having a hard time getting traction in the sand. The tractor bogs down and I dig big ruts under even light loading of the plow. Any suggestions? Tires are 8x24 rear, 4x12 front. Bigger tires? Should I load the rears? Both? Anyone with simular experience?

Old and CNKS have good valid points and I would probably utilize their advice.

One thing popped into my brain as I was plowing my garden yesterday. Sometimes I seemed to get hung up... unlevel field - drawbar getting caught up on the hills. This would literaly stop the Cub up cold. However, a lighter touch on the depth lever and occassionaly lifting the hydraulics up gave added traction and I could carry on.

I would suggest you practice "floating" the blade by gently and lightly lifting/dropping the blade to get added traction.

As for Old's duallies comment -- wheel horse and a couple other has spaceers adapters to add a second tire. My mentor GeorgeW, suggests large washers and longer bolts etc., to add a second set of rears.

I would look for a post by George W and email him. He can also be found on the Cub forums..

Here's an old tip from running dune buggies on the beach...lower your tire pressure to about half the normal PSI...let us know if this helps. Stan

Old is correct. But, do you have the hitch set so that it floats? Your Cub has 2-way hydraulics (down pressure), I think. Very hard to regulate depth with down pressure on the blade, it needs to float. You simply cannot run it even moderately deep, the tractor does not have enough power, particularly with those small tires, and sand is the worst possible "soil" there is.

In sand your problem is not enough foot. Wider tires front and rear is about the only way to go. Adding weight will only make it worse. Duals front and rear would be real good but not sure it can be done.
