took one of my 2 48 super a's out of the barn today. had been stored for a while but as usual, started right up. the hydraulics lifted the 5' mid mount sickle bar as usual. backed the tractor out, shut her down and came back to it about 1/2 hour later. started her up but the mower would not raise. touch control levers, etc seem to be working fine. pulled fill plug and plenty of fluid, although pressure or an air pocket seemed to blow out when i pulled the plug. never had any hydraulic problems on either super a in 15 years. am guessing the pump or maybe the woodruff key for the pump drive gear sheared. suggestions welcomed before i take the pump off.

Pull the battery out so you can get to the back of the TC unit. You should find a pipe plug in the TC head. Remove the plug and behind it you should find a little plug (also screwed in) with a small orifice and probably screen. remove the orifice plug and make sure the orifice and screen are clean. Put it and the plug back and give it a try.

Been a long time since I have been in one, but I think what I said is essentially right.

thanks, pulled the large filter screen on touch control unit and pulled the small orifice screen as well.pretty gummed up,slightly gelled and blackish.cleaned everything well, put new o-rings on hydraulic pump(had pump checked at local ih shop, they said it was ok)..filled with fresh fluid and bled air out. now if i help lift the sickle bar by hand, the rockshaft will move and lift the mower..now when i move the touch control lever to the down position, the mower will not lower..now i'm thinking i have a valve problem of some type, possibly sticking.

"gummed up,slightly gelled and blackish" suggests it is time to pull the Touch-Control unit apart to clean thoroughly and replace all the o-rings. Not as bad as it sounds, but it will take some time. Just keep everything super clean. Use only hydraulic fluid to lube things as it goes back together.

update:added a few ounces of hydraulic system cleaner(supposed to use it at 5% concentration)..ran it for a while..drained the system again and cleaned the large screen again, this time not too much sediment...refilled the touch control and added a few more ounces of cleaner(breaks up gum and varnish and keeps it suspended till you drain it and replenish with fresh fluid)...bled system and kept working levers back and forth..all of a sudden, the sickle mower was going up and down like gang busters ...have tried it several times since and works fine..glad to have it back working and the moral to the story is keep an eye on and change your hydraulic fluid periodically..thanks for all help and advice.

thanks, i was getting to that conclusion, unfortunately.was holding out hope, the cleaning and new fluid would resurrect it.getting ready to prune our blueberry field with the sickle mower. don't believe i will have time to tear hydraulic unit apart before mowing time. so will have to use our other super a with rear mount sickle. this tractor has a mid mount mower and equal length rear axles(one is from a farmall b) makes it easier to navigate the rocks in our field and it is easier to look ahead mowing rather than behind. incidentally, this is the same tractor that, years ago you gave some advice re: smoking, burning oil. we re-ringed it, had a valve job done, and did lower end bearings. runs great now, but sadly will not operate the mower currently. thanks again, steve.

Try and move the levers back and forth with the fill plug out mite have air in the system and will have to prime the pump again. You should be able to feel on the pump to tell if it is pumping as it will whine.

had already tried the air bleed procedure as recomended in my manual, did not seem to help, but will try in the a.m. just to be sure. also held my hand on pump, hard to tell whether it is pumping or not..will crank up my other super a with working hydraulics and compare pump sounds and vibrations, etc. tommorow morning.
