Well, bought a rebuild kit for the carb. Now for the problem--starts and runs for 5-10 minutes and then dies. Any ideas as to what would be the culprit? Thanks.

A GOOD WAY TO CHECK THE FUEL LEVEL IS TO REMOVE THE DRAIN PLUG ON THE BOTTOM OF THE CARB. USUALLY A I/8 PIPE PLUG. SCREW IN A 1/8 PIPE NIPPLE OR A 1/8 BARBED HOSE FITTING. PLACE A PIECE OF CLEAR TUBING ABOUT A FOOT LONG OVER THE FITTING AND TURN THE HOSE UPWARD ABOVE THE CARB MAKING SURE NOT TO KINK THE HOSE. WHEN YOU TURN THE FUEL VALVE ON YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SEE AT WHAT LEVEL THE FUEL IS IN YOUR CARB. BOWL.IF THE FUEL DOSEN,T RUN IN, IT IS PRETTY OBVIOUS THAT YOU HAVE SOME BLOCKAGE SOMEWHERE.GOOD LUCK, VETTE

Did you remove and clean the fuel inlet screen? Did you adjust the float for level and drop? Is the float rubbing and hanging up on the sides of the fuel bowl?

Rusty, with the bowl off, how far should the float hang down? Have set the other adjustment valves the way the manual states. It is this darn float that is the problem. Thanks for any help you can give.

Charles, the float drop should be set at 1 15/16 inches. This adjustment is made by carefully bending the small tab on the float that contacts the needle seat. This is one of the many things that really irritates me with some rebuild kits, the instruction sheet is very vague about the procedure to clean the carb, and some of the important information is not even mentioned, such as you have found out.

Also, be sure to take the level and drop measurements on both of the floats. It is very important that both are the same.
